Batman
INDULGENT MUSINGS:
Because of my age at the time, Kevin Conroy's Batman in the 90's animated series is forever MY BATMAN. So much so that catching small glimpses of Adam West's rendition used to anger me. They made a total joke out of my brooding hero. I should admit that I loved 1997's Batman and Robin. I guess you can't ask for consistency in the criticisms of a 9-year-old.
But alas, my third grade teacher, Mrs. Lister, was right. Younger me was truly an idiot because Adam West's original Batman series is a masterpiece (and a never-ending assault of Schwarzenegger ice puns paired with Batsuit nipples is not). It's easy to dismiss the show as "outdated" or "cheesy," but doing that is completely missing the point. The original Batman series wasn't aiming to be The Dark Knight or even Batman Forever. It was going for something less palatable:
Camp
To fully embrace campiness, you must relish in everything ostentatious and theatrical. At it's worst, campiness can be alienating. It's hard to connect with a character or problem when everything is stilted and strange. Conversely, it can feel deeply familiar or nostalgic like a warm, wholesome hug. That's Adam West's Batman.
Batman was a comedy. For some of you that may sound obvious, but I'm hoping to blow a few minds here. Executive Producer, William Dozier, once described the show as "the only situation comedy on the air without a laugh track." It was intentionally campy. Just look at how many bat ears they put on the letters in the logo. No one does that in earnest. Oh also, Adam West is a comedy genius.
Watching a handful of episodes and random clips while preparing for this spec really left me in awe. The show goes full camp while very rarely showing its hand. I think that's why so many viewers saw it as "accidentally cheesy." They were trolling the masses well before President Trump tweeted (insert whatever Trump tweeted today).
EPISODE SUMMARY:
(This is replacing the "Seed of the Idea" section. I feel like this is more useful.)
A mysterious televised news network starts slandering Batman and Robin and turning all of Gotham's citizens against them. Can the dynamic duo get to the bottom of this fake news outbreak and repair their reputations?
HONESTY CORNER:
You guys. This was the most fun I've had on one of these specs so far. Because of that, I might have gone a little too campy. Once I starting hearing the characters' over-enunciated diction in the dialogue, I couldn't help but indulge. Listen, I started this blog to encourage myself to write without feeling too precious. This thing was breezy, the stakes were low, and I just ran with it. I hope it's enjoyable!
SPECIAL THANKS TO:
My friend Shawn Bush, my wife Katie Yancey, and my brother-in-law Joe Miceli for their feedback on this one!
